Sure, you’ve probably heard of fried green tomatoes, if not for the southern dish, for the famous move of the same name. But how about green tomato soup? Or green tomato pasta sauce? How about green tomato chili? (Yes, it’s a thing!) I’m willing to bet that there are plenty of new dishes on this list that you’ve never had, which makes them even more fun to whip up. What are you waiting for? You just might find some new favorites with these easy, delicious green tomato recipes.
1. Fried Green Tomatoes
I’m telling you — if you’ve never had fried green tomatoes, you’re seriously missing out. This might not be the healthiest way to eat a tomato, but it’s certainly one of the tastiest! This is a southern delicacy, and you’ll know why after trying this recipe. Don’t skip the remoulade sauce for dipping — it’s a must. I like to add a pinch or two of cayenne pepper to the batter, too, to give my tomatoes an extra kick.
2. Green Tomato Salsa
If you’ve ever had salsa verde at a Mexican restaurant, you were probably eating green tomatoes and never realized it. This salsa has a slightly different flavor than those made with red tomatoes, but it still pairs perfectly with chips, tacos, or anything else you typically put salsa on.
3. Green Tomato Stew
This is a light stew thanks to the use of coconut milk instead of cream, which also makes it vegan. It’s full of spice, Indian flavor, and makes for the perfect dinner, especially during the warmer months of the year.
4. Grilled Green Tomatoes
Think of these as the much healthier cousins of those fried green tomatoes! Grilled vegetables are always a hit, and even though tomatoes are technically a fruit, these still remind me of other veggies I throw on the grill. They’re marinated in a savory yet sweet marinade containing Worcestershire and brown sugar. It’s so good, I’m planning on trying it on other veggies on the grill, too.
5. Roasted Green Tomato Soup
Believe it or not, this tastes a lot like traditional tomato soup you know and love. But the bright, green hue really makes it stand out. This soup is creamy, dreamy, and the perfect starter for any meal.
6. Green Tomato Relish
This recipe is the perfect way to use up leftover tomatoes. It’s also an ideal accompaniment for any hot dog, burger, sandwich, you name it! Just don’t forget the mustard.
7. Green Tomato Salad
This is the salad I make when I’m totally sick of salads but still want a salad. The lime and chili flakes give it the perfect mix of tang and spice, and the cilantro really takes it over the top. Of course, if you’re one of those people who thinks cilantro tastes like soap, you can leave it out.
8. Green Tomato Pickles
Trust me, you won’t even believe how good these are. They taste exactly like sweet dill pickles, and they’re so much better than the jarred ones you find in grocery stores. They’re delicious on sandwiches, burgers, or even alone as a snack.
9. Green Tomato Gazpacho
This soup is light, refreshing, and even though gazpacho is most commonly served in the summer, you’ll want to have it all year-round. I like to make a big batch of it to keep in the fridge and have for lunch during the week. It’s healthy, low-calorie, and so yummy, too!
10. Green Tomato Chutney
You can put this tasty chutney on anything to jazz it up or give it extra flavor, but by far, my favorite way to eat it is quite simple. I toast sourdough bread, put a piece of cheddar on top, then slather the chutney all over. Mmm!
11. Green Tomato Ketchup
Ok, ok, so you might have to get used to seeing green ketchup on your fries instead of red, but I’m telling you, it’s worth a shot! Homemade ketchup is so easy to make, plus, it doesn’t have all of the preservatives and added sweeteners like store-bought ketchup does. This recipe also has green chili in it, which gives the ketchup an extra kick.
12. Fried Green Tomato Tacos
Yep, it’s true. You really can put just about anything in a taco! Fried green tomato tacos are crunchy, and they have a nice dose of heat, too. Add all of your favorite taco toppings, including that fresh batch of green tomato salsa you made!
13. Green Tomato Pasta Sauce
Made with olive oil, green tomatoes, fresh basil, and parmesan cheese, this sauce is not as heavy as marinara but still provides a tasty contrast to the bland pasta. This recipe calls for fettuccine, but feel free to put this sauce on any type of pasta you want.
14. Green Tomato Chili
The color of this chili will come out different from what you’re used to, but the flavors are out of this world. Green tomatoes, jalapenos, ground beef, poblano peppers, pinto beans, and a bunch of seasonings make for a tangy taste unlike other chilis you’ve had before. This one will certainly stand out at the next neighborhood chili cookoff!
15. Green Tomato Casserole
Pretty much everything tastes amazing in casserole form, am I right?! Green tomatoes are no different. In this dish, they’re layered with bread crumbs and sharp cheddar cheese. I like to make this to go along with meats, though it’s perfectly fine as a stand-alone meal as well.
16. Green Tomato Pizza with Onion and Cheddar
I don’t know about you, but I love trying out fun new pizza toppings! The combination of the tomatoes with the onion and cheddar on this pie is just to die for. Plus, it’s pretty, too. This is yet another recipe to pull out of your back pocket when you have tomatoes lying around that just don’t want to turn red.
17. Fried Green Tomato BLT
I can remember visiting my grandparents as a kid, and my grandma would always make BLTs for lunch when we arrived. This sandwich, however, is a major BLT upgrade! The breading from the fried green tomatoes gives it an extra wow factor for sure.
18. Fried Green Tomato Tart
If you’re looking for something that will really impress your guests, look no further than this exquisite fried green tomato tart. It’s so easy to make, but it looks like something made by a professional chef! This is an ideal addition to any brunch menu, or even a light dinner, served with a fresh, green salad.
19. Green Tomato Pie
This recipe is very similar to apple pie, but it’s not as sweet or tart since you’ll use green tomatoes instead of apples. Still, it’s something different, and everyone will love trying a pie they’ve never had before.
20. Green Tomato Cake
Tomatoes in a cake? Hear me out! It might sound a little strange at first, but the flavor in this cake is incredibly delicious! Plus, at least you’ll get a serving of fruit in while you’re having dessert. Be sure not to leave out the coconut flakes on top. They really give this cake a little extra something.
