But don’t shy away! It’s a whole lot easier to make than you may think (and a whole lot cheaper). From raw salmon to cooked crab, there are so many ways to fill those sensational rolls. With sticky, seasoned rice and a bamboo mat at the ready, the possibilities are endless! Be your own sushi chef and dive into these sushi recipes!
1. Dragon Roll
After the California roll, the dragon roll is America’s favorite sushi. And for good reason. It’s absolutely loaded with goodies. A dragon roll is an inside-out type of sushi roll. It’s not a traditional Japanese recipe, but that doesn’t mean it’s any less delicious. Shrimp tempura, cucumber, nori, and rice are layered with thinly sliced avocado. They’re made to look like dragon scales. Then, everything is drizzled with spicy mayonnaise and unagi sauce. Yum!
2. Salmon Sushi
This homemade salmon sushi is a great place to start for beginners. It’s super easy to make and only needs five ingredients. Simply cover your seaweed sheets with seasoned rice. Layer in salmon, cream cheese, and avocado, roll up, slice, and serve! Not only do they taste amazing, but they’re also fun to make. So why not gather the family together for a sushi-making party?
3. Tobiko Sushi
Tobiko is a type of sushi that’s filled with crab and avocado and topped with tobiko or flying fish roe. Orange tobiko is the most common color of fish roe you’ll find. It adds a wonderful eye-catching look to these tasty rolls. No food coloring required! This is a must-try for sushi lovers. It’s a great introductory roll to more unique and adventurous Japanese flavors.
4. Sushi Rice and California Rolls
If you’re not too keen on the idea of tucking into raw fish, California rolls are just the ticket. Now, the key to these delicious California rolls is the perfect sushi rice. It’s all about getting the sushi vinegar and seasoning on point. Serve these topped with spicy mayo and dip them into a wasabi/soy sauce concoction. It’s the perfect bite.
5. Spicy Tuna Rolls
You can never go wrong with the classics. Spicy tuna rolls are always my go-to. Sriracha sauce is the key to these spicy rolls. Sashimi grade tuna is tossed in a sesame sriracha sauce and topped with spicy mayo for an extra kick. You can get your hands on sashimi-grade salmon at your local Asian or Japanese grocery store. It can be a little pricey, but it’s still far cheaper than in restaurants.
6. Futomaki 太巻き (Maki Sushi)
Futomaki is a traditional thick sushi packed with colorful ingredients. If you love to give new flavors a try, definitely give these rolls a go. This futomaki is filled with unique ingredients like gourd strips and freshwater eel. It’s also packed with shiitake mushrooms, spinach, cucumber, and seasoned codfish flakes. Some of these ingredients may be a little hard to find, but it’s worth the effort!
7. Natto Rolls
Now, these natto rolls are the ultimate meal prep and lunch box treat. They’re great finger food, and super easy to grab and go! The natto roll is one of the most popular Japanese sushi rolls. It’s made by filling natto (fermented soybeans) and sushi rice inside a nori sheet. Roll it up, and you’re ready to go. This is a great alternative for those that prefer not to eat raw fish. It’s perfect for kids and vegetarians alike!
8. Kappa Maki | Veggie Sushi Roll
Kappa maki is another fantastic veggie sushi roll. It’s great for sushi newbies and for when you’re looking for a light lunch. And the best part is that it’s so incredibly easy to make at home. It’s a thin roll of simple sushi (maki) with a single cucumber slice at the center. I love these rolls for their light and refreshing taste. They make a fantastic palate cleanser. Plus, they’re also vegan and vegetarian-friendly!
9. Uramaki Sushi with Chilli Crab
These stunning uramaki sushi rolls with chili crab are so addictive. One roll isn’t enough! Uramaki refers to an inside-out sushi roll. The filling is wrapped in seaweed and covered in sushi rice around the outside. And sesame seeds decorate the outside of the roll. A dipping sauce is essential for these tasty rolls. Pickled ginger is also fantastic. As to not offend sushi chefs, make sure you eat it as a palate cleanser and not as a topping!
10. Scattered Sushi (Chirashizushi)
Who said sushi had to be enjoyed as a roll? This scattered sushi is exactly what the name suggests. Sushi toppings and fillings are scattered on top of seasoned sushi rice. Chirashizushi can have a multitude of different ingredients, not just raw fish. This recipe uses boiled prawns, grilled eel, and sashimi salmon, along with fresh, pickled, and cooked veggies. This is the easiest of the sushi dishes as there’s no rolling required! Just scatter and dig in.
11. Rainbow Roll Sushi
Hailing its name from the array of colorful ingredients, these rolls taste as good as they look. They’re stuffed with imitation crab sticks, avocado, cucumber, and sashimi-grade salmon. Simply stunning. Serve up these gorgeous rainbow rolls with soy sauce and pickled ginger. Yum!
12. Temaki Sushi (Hand Roll)
This hand-rolled sushi makes sushi night so effortless. It’s great for sharing as everybody gets to control what goes in their own hand rolls. Temaki sushi is made out of a rolled cone of seaweed filled with sushi rice, sashimi fish, and veggies. The world is your oyster when it comes to the filling. Choose anything from salmon roe to sea urchin. It’s all delicious!
13. Kimbap (Korean Seaweed Rice Rolls)
Kimbap are Korean rice rolls. They may look a lot like sushi but they’re actually very different. Japanese sushi is made out of rice seasoned with vinegar, raw fish, seafood, and vegetables. Korean rolls use sesame oil in the rice and fillings like meat, imitation crab, ham, eggs, and cheese. Instead of soy sauce and pickled ginger, kimbap is usually served with kimchi and pickled vegetables. Give it a try!
14. Inari Sushi
Now, these deep-fried tofu pockets are truly something special. Known as Inarizushi in Japan, inari sushi is a delicious traditional sushi recipe you may have never even heard of. The tofu pockets are cooked in a dashi-based broth. Once they absorb all the flavors, the tofu pockets are squeezed to remove the liquid and stuffed with sushi rice. They’re perfect for bento boxes, lunches, picnics, and whenever you’re feeling snacky.
15. Temari Sushi
Looking for a show-stopping finger food to serve guests? These Temari sushi balls are colorful, cute, and bite-sized. They’re super fun to make, so, bring out your creative side! If you’re anything like me, you love any excuse to start a creative art project. And the only thing more enjoyable than creating fun designs is eating them!
