Ah… dulce de leche. Besides the sheer amount of calories, what’s not to love? Made from slow-cooked sweetened condensed milk, this Spanish caramel is ooey-gooey and magnificently sweet and salty. Because it’s a tad too sweet, it isn’t typically eaten on its own (although personally, I don’t mind). However, it makes for a spectacular glaze or filling to a variety of confections. There are way too many dulce de leche desserts to choose from, so I narrowed down the options for you. Even with this shortened list, though, it’s still hard to pick a favorite. Let’s get started! Here are 14 dulce de leche desserts to satisfy your sweet tooth.
1. Alfajores
Alfajores are ridiculously tasty South American sandwich cookies. The cookies themselves are so soft they melt in your mouth. The filling, as you may have guessed, is sweet and sticky dulce de leche. I love how they’re not overly sweet. The cookies have a creamy buttery flavor which dials down the sweetness of the filling. The wonderful texture and balance of flavors make these cookies insanely addictive.
2. Dulce De Leche Cake
This dulce de leche cake is the true definition of decadence. I mean, just look at it. This is a culinary masterpiece, for sure! With this cake, you’ll get four layers of caramel sponge cake, filled and frosted with sweet dulce de leche, roasted hazelnuts, and chocolate sprinkles. You’d think this cake would be overwhelmingly sweet, but it’s not. The fluffiness of the cake and the crunch from the roasted hazelnuts do a fine job at balancing out the dulce de leche flavor.
3. Dulce De Leche Chocolate Cups
They look just like peanut butter cups, but they taste better… so much better. Instead of peanut butter, you’ll get sweet and salty dulce de leche in between two layers of decadent chocolate. The cups are sprinkled with sea salt crystals to amp up the flavor of the chocolate and balance out the sweetness of the dulce de leche. You’ll get that initial snappy crunch from the chocolate when you first bite into it. Then, the chocolate, dulce leche, and salt crystals will slowly dissolve on your tongue, giving you a smooth and luscious mix of sweet and salty chocolate and caramel goodness. But don’t take my word for it. Make this recipe and try it for yourself!
4. Dulce de Leche Chocolate Pecan Pie
Dulce de leche, chocolates, and chopped pecans star this delicious pie. The soft, chewy, and sticky filling tastes terrific with the buttery and flaky crust. The filling contains dulce de leche, brown sugar, corn syrup, and chocolate, but don’t worry. The two cups of pecans absorb the sweetness and give you a perfect harmony of flavors.
5. Dulce De Leche Cupcakes
Soft and fluffy vanilla cupcakes are frosted with a smooth and sweet dulce de leche buttercream. It couldn’t get any better than that. The frosting, while fluffy, is a bit heavy because of the dulce de leche. The cupcakes are super light and have a mild flavor, which goes perfectly with the heavy dulce de leche frosting. That’s what I call a match made in heaven.
6. Dulce De Leche Stuffed Mexican Chocolate Cookies
These aren’t your average chocolate cookies. Spiced with cayenne and cinnamon and filled with a dulce de leche center, they’re definitely one-of-a-kind. You’ll love how the kick from the spices complements the sweetness of the chocolate cookies and the dulce de leche filling. When it comes to flavor balance, this dessert has it in the bag.
7. Dulce De Leche Chocolate Mousse
Since it’s basically milk jam, dulce de leche tends to be on the heavy side. But when you incorporate it into a chocolate mousse, you’ll get a super light and airy dessert. Chocolate and caramel make a fantastic pair, which is why this dessert works. Folding the two with whipping cream creates this delicate mousse that’s just absolutely phenomenal.
8. Dulce De Leche Pecan Cinnamon Rolls
Regular cinnamon rolls are already flawless. They’re sweet, ooey-gooey, buttery, and that cinnamon sugar flavor is purely delightful. Throw in dulce de leche into the mixt and you’ll get rolls that are even more absurdly delicious! This recipe may not be the easiest one on this list, but it’s definitely a must-try.
9. Dulce De Leche Coffee Milkshake
This next dessert combines three of my favorite things into one epic treat, so you can just imagine how happy it makes me. Dulce de leche plus coffee plus milkshake equals love. The combination of sweet, salty, creamy, and slight bitterness from the coffee makes for such a delightfully refreshing beverage.
10. No Churn Dulce De Leche Ice Cream
If this is your first time making homemade ice cream, this is the recipe for you. It only calls for two ingredients, and you don’t even need an ice cream machine to make it. It may be easy and simple, but the combination of whipping cream and dulce de leche is totally legendary.
11. Dulce De Leche Filled Churros
Classic churros are great, but these ones are way more epic. They have sweet, dulce de leche in the center, so there really is no competition. They’re crunchy and golden brown on the outside, tender on the inside, and oozing with sweet and salty caramel. I think I’m in churro heaven.
12. Dulce De Leche Thumbprint Cookies
Buttery shortbread cookies are filled with dulce de leche and Nutella and sprinkled with sea salt for good measure. If you’re looking for a special dessert to make for the holidays, you have just found it. From the shortbread base to the caramel filling to the sea salt on top, these cookies are completely delightful.
13. Coconut and Dulce De Leche Tart
Tarts often feature a fruit or berry filling, but for this one, you’ll get the magical combination of coconut and dulce de leche. You may have not heard of this tandem before, but it’s definitely a classic. In fact, this tart is a popular Argentinian dessert. If you think the pairing is odd, you have to give it a try. This combination may just become your new favorite.
14. Dulce de Leche Magic Bars with Chocolate & Almonds
This recipe takes the classic seven-layer bars into a whole new level of awesomeness by elevating one key ingredient. You’ll still get that crumbly crust at the bottom and the chocolate chips and nuts on top. Instead of sweetened condensed milk, you’ll use dulce de leche to bind the toppings. If you think it won’t make a significant difference, think again! The dulce de leche gives the bars an extra gooey consistency and even more extra punch of flavor. Click on a star to rate it!
