While it may not contain actual magic, this edible algae certainly looks the part. Spirulina comes in a range of lovely ocean hues, from greens to blues. In fact, spirulina is often used as a healthy alternative to food dyes. But spirulina is more than just a fun way to add visual excitement to your dishes. It has a ton of health benefits, too. Spirulina is packed with nutrients, it’s anti-inflammatory, it can lower blood pressure, and so much more. Now, spirulina on its own is more of an acquired taste, like seaweed. But don’t worry, it’s pretty easy to mask its flavor. Here are 10 of my favorite spirulina recipes!
1. Spirulina Smoothie
If green means “go,” this green smoothie will definitely jumpstart your morning. It has lots of healthy ingredients to fire up your cells and get your body going. Plus, it tastes pretty great. It’s loaded with antioxidant-rich fruits and veggies like mango, avocado, spinach, and banana. Spirulina and hemp add protein, so you stay full all morning. It’s creamy, tropical, and delicious.
2. Spirulina Smoothie Bowl (Vegan)
I know you’ll love this sweet and nutty vegan smoothie bowl. This smoothie bowl features nut butter, banana, spirulina, almond milk, and a natural sweetener. Each spoonful is brimming with fiber, potassium, protein, and healthy fats. Plus, it has a good dose of vitamins and minerals! This delicious bowl of goodness makes a great base for all kinds of toppings. Add some fresh fruit, granola, nut butter drizzle, coconut, or cacao nibs. Heck, I’d add it all!
3. Spirulina Superfood Bites
Channel your inner comic book superhero with these superfood bites. I can’t promise super-strength or invisibility, but I can promise some great health benefits. These bites are loaded with scientifically-proven superfoods. Each bite has cacao, dates, nuts, goji berries, spirulina, maca, and coconut. That means you get a delicious dose of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, fiber, and healthy fats. They have a lovely color, a great texture, and they taste fantastic. You and your body will love them!
4. Mint Chocolate Chip Nice Cream
I love ice cream, especially mint chocolate chip ice cream. It’s decadent yet refreshing. This nice cream version looks and tastes like the original but is much healthier. Although cream and sugar-based ice creams have their place, this one is better on the regular. This nice cream is still sweet and creamy, but it’s lighter. It’s minty, chocolatey, creamy, and naturally sweet. But most importantly, it has that perfect mint green color. You can thank the spirulina for that!
5. Spirulina Chia Seed Pudding
If you’ve never had chia pudding, then you’re missing out. Okay, that was strongly worded, but you really should try it. It’s healthy, delicious, and creamy. This version has an added nutrition boost because of the fresh spirulina. It also turns the pudding a lovely grassy green. If you want to mask the spirulina flavor a little bit more, add cocoa powder. The chocolate is delicious. This recipe uses oat milk, but you can use coconut milk for a stronger flavor. Top it with your favorite fruit, granola, seeds, and/or nuts.
6. Blue Spirulina Pancakes
Breakfast has never been so fun! These Cookie Monster-blue pancakes will please kids and adults alike. Did I mention they’re delicious? Blue spirulina gives you a saturated blue color without the chemical taste of food dye. And you get the health benefits of spirulina. Better yet, mashed bananas sweeten the cakes and cover the algae-like taste of spirulina. These pancakes are great if you have any dietary restrictions. They’re wheat, refined sugar, and dairy-free. This recipe even has an option for fully gluten-free pancakes. The recipe does use an egg, but you can easily substitute that with applesauce.
7. Raw Vegan No-Bake Spirulina Cheesecake
This stunning emerald green cheesecake will be the star of your next event. It’s luxe in both appearance and flavor. Seriously, make this if you want to make an impression! Oh, and it’s healthy, too. All the ingredients are raw, so you won’t lose any nutritional benefits they contain. But don’t worry, his cheesecake is seriously indulgent even though it’s healthy! It’s naturally sweet, thanks to dates and maple syrup. It’s nutty and very refreshing. Since this cheesecake is vegan, everyone can enjoy it. And because it’s no-bake, you get to make a big impact with little effort.
8. Galaxy Donuts (No Food Coloring)
These galaxy donuts are out of this world! They’re super colorful, fun, and crazy tasty. Really, this is an easy, basic, baked donut recipe. The result is a sweet and soft, delicious donut. The fun comes in the frosting. The icing uses blue spirulina powder and beet powder instead of food coloring. The result is gorgeous, vibrant, all-natural colored icing that is super delicious! The best part is that they’re easily customizable to specialized diets. This recipe comes with lots of suggestions for vegan, gluten-free, and sugar-free diets. And they’re already egg-free!
9. No-Bake Mint Chocolate Brownie Bars
Mint and chocolate go together, like peanut butter and jelly. It’s an iconic flavor combination. I know you’re going to love these delicious mint chocolate brownie bars. Picture this: a chewy, nutty, chocolatey brownie covered with refreshing mint and more chocolate. Not only are these mint chocolate brownie bars delicious, but they’re pretty healthy. They contain a good amount of protein, antioxidants, and healthy fats. But they’re still a dessert! They’re rich, cooling, and sure to satisfy all your chocolate cravings. Oh, and they’re totally vegan.
10. Spirulina Dressing
I love salads! Salads are fresh, delicious, and super healthy unless you drown them in your typical dressings. And I’m sorry to say that many big-brand dressings are full of unhealthy ingredients. That sort of defeats the purpose of having a salad, which is where this dressing comes in. You can still have a delicious salad dressing without the bad stuff. This dressing uses only whole ingredients and it’s easy to make. Simply blend everything together. The end result is the green goddess of dressings. It’s healthy, creamy, fresh, and flavorful. I promise you’ll love it! Click on a star to rate it!
